2021 - Term 4 Week 7 Newsletter
Principal's Message

Dear Parents
This week we had the privilege to listen to our Year 5 students campaigning for Leadership roles within our school for 2022.
When I spoke to the group of students who are seeking Leadership roles, I began by telling them that Leadership can be hard to define and it means different things to different people.
I asked them all a series of questions, some questions as simple as what makes a good leader, who is a role model for you in your leadership aspirations and what qualities do you bring to the leadership role you seek. I had many and varied answers from these students, but none strayed away from my own beliefs of what a good leader is and what it takes to be a good leader.
My simple, yet not always easy method and application of leadership can be challenging at the best of times. Although, I follow these basic principles - set standards, keep to these standards and allow others to see the standards you accept. Follow relentlessy an agreed direction and help yourself and others to do the right things, at the right time, in order to move forward for the benefit of all. Always start your conversations in the space of empathy, seek to understand first, then involve, share and support those who you work with and for. Finally, create an inspiring vision, then motivate and inspire others to reach this vision with you. The vision for our school should be one that is achievable, measurable in success and inclusive of all, which will ultimately bring about a positive change for the goodness of our school. Effective leadership is all of this and more, takes real effort and conviction.
It is exciting to know that we have a group of children who are very excited to be a part of this journey of Leadership within our school. I know that any of the children chosen for leadership positions will represent the school well and most importantly represent themselves and their family. We look forward to congratulating the new leaders shortly at our Leadership Mass later in the Term.
Please join with me in congratulating the following children who have been voted in by their peers in the following Leadership positions.
School Captains - Hayley Vos and Hanz Herrera
Vice Captains - Ellie Seymour and Robert Davison

HSC exams
This week the HSC commenced. I ask that you all keep Year 12 students in your thoughts and prayers over the next four weeks as they complete their HSC. A number of staff and parents from St Joseph’s community, have their own children completing Year 12 this year. It has been a turbulent two years for these students, through COVID restrictions and lengthy stints of home learning. The students have learned much academically to prepare for their final step in their school journey, but they have also learned much more about persistence, grit and resilience. We pray these young adults do well and work through this experience knowing that they gave their best efforts.

Stage 2 Writing
It is such a pleasure to listen to and read our children's writing on a daily basis, writing that they are very proud of and writing that has been developed through feedback recieved from their teachers and peers. Jack's piece of writing was constructed in the form of a diary entry, retelling the fable of Goldilocks and the three bears. Jack spoke to me on how he developed this piece of writing which uses upscaled words - Tier 3 words, phrases that Show and Don't tell and an understanding of what makes an interesting Diary entry for others to read. Thank you for sharing your writing with us Jack , I'm looking forward to the next diary entry you create!

PAT testing
The children have begun undertaking a series of tests called ACER PAT. These tests are to help determine where the children are currently at in the areas of English and Mathematics. The results will help teachers focus on what the children need now and into 2022. The tests are ususally undertaken during October/November of every year as requested by the Lismore Diocese.
Whole School Write
Next week, our students will engage in our Term 4, Whole School Write. The type of text for this task will be a persuasive text using the evidence gathered from an event.
During Term 1 our students wrote about an epic investigation into the theft of Mr Kiely’s car. Constable Wendy Hudson worked extremely hard behind the scenes to read all the persuasive writing pieces from our students. Mr Toole was found to be guilty of theft and Constable Wendy made sure that our teacher criminal was brought to justice.
Stay tuned this Term, we have again noticed our sneaky teachers have sticky fingers. Poor Mrs Pope’s Oasis Canteen goodies have gone missing and it is up to our detective geniuses to persuade Mrs Pope who has been light fingered and stripped the canteen of food.
If you wish to be a part of our detective work, please contact Mrs Dewhurst or Ms Solares and we can send you a voting form to assist our students in their detective work.
Library
Overdue Books
This week, all students with overdue books, received an overdue notice. We would love to see all overdue books returned ASAP. As we move towards the end of the year we require all Library books stored processed and a stock take finalised. To remain on top of the overdue book issue, returning all missing Library books promptly is a huge help. If you have already attended to your child's overdue book notice this week, I am truly grateful and thank you for your support.

The sound of Santa's sleigh bells can be heard in the distance as the end Term 4 draws near. On the last day of school, TUESDAY 14 DECEMBER 2021, TWO inflatables will be erected onsite. Students will participate in their year levels to have a turn on the obstacles, one of which is a water slide. Everyone is very excited about having the inflatables at school.
