2021 Week 7 Term 2
Dear Parents
As the weather cools and the days shorten it can become more and more difficult to get your child out of bed. We have noticed that there are quite a few children arriving at school after 8:50 am. This is too late for your child to arrive. Children require time to adjust to school structures by having a play before lessons commence or to touch base with their teacher and adjust through the zones of regulation. Our gates are open by 8:30 am with supervision from this time. Before and After School Care is operating for children requiring care before school, from 6.00 am. I thank you for your support in this matter, thus your child ready will be for learning.
Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 5 students for their work in NAPLAN two weeks ago. A big thank you to all staff who worked together to prepare the students and ensure the testing process ran smoothly.
The Children and Young Person’s (Care and Protection) Act 1998
Parents need to be aware that as teachers in the state of NSW, we are required by law to report certain information to the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ). Reports to the Child Protection Helpline (Ph. 132 111, 24 hrs/7 days) must be made where we have reasonable grounds to suspect that a child or young person is at risk of significant harm and our concerns are current.
Risk of significant harm may occur from a single act or omission or to a series of acts or omissions. We can gain help to determine whether we need to report by using the DCJ online Mandatory Reporters Guide: https://reporter.childstory.nsw.gov.au/s/
We can also contact the Office of Safeguarding (Ph. 4979 1390 Mon-Fri). Information about the roles and functions of the Office of Safeguarding can be found here: https://officeofsafeguarding.org.au/
Playground Improvements
Last year the P & F committee made a marvellous effort to begin the arduous task of raising funds, sourcing resources and personnel from our parent community, for an Adventure Playground to be erected on the back oval.
The process has been delayed until further notice due to the following factors -
- The first factor was the process of informing the Catholic Schools Office regarding plans to modify playground space and to adhere to the WHS aspects of a new playground within schools.
- The second is the proposed site for the playground. Following relocation of the Dineen Building, a problem occured with a series of pipes not being closed off correctly, leaving the ground constantly water logged. This plumbing issue has now been rectified.
- The third reason for the delay, is the state of the MacKillop Room. This building requires major structural repairs, refurbishment and re-purposing. The proposal is currently with the CSO for consideration and approval. We are hoping to be informed of the time frame, for the works, in the near future. Understanding, that this major refurbishment will require machinery, vehicles and building equipment to enter via the Cameron Street double gates, in effect causing disruption and interference to the Adventure Playground site.
We appreciate the efforts of our P & F and that of our parent community for their support and assistance in providing the resources and their time for such a big project to take place. We will still endeavour to make this Adventure playground possible for our children and will keep you all informed as to the right time to begin construction.
Congratulations
We welcome into the Catholic faith Mrs Rhianna Hancock and Miss Sophie Anderson who completed their Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA program). May you both be filled with God's blessings and graces from the Sacraments recieved on your special day.
If anyone is interested in what it means to undertake an Adult program in the church, please visit this site https://www.rcia.org.au/ or make an appointment at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish for more information.
Kindergarten 2022 Enrolments
Enrolments are open for Kindergarten 2022 and vacancies are filling fast. At this stage we have not confirmed a cut off number for Kindergarten enrolments. Please make family and neighbours aware of this opening, they may be interested in enrolling a child to our wonderful school. Enrolment packages are available from the school Office. We encourage you to collect a pack and pass one onto an interested parent or friend. School Tours are currently available for any families who may be interested. We ask that families make an appointment for such tours through the school Office. 6585 1745

Evacuation Drill and Lockdown
As part of our safety program at St Joseph's School Wauchope, we will be conducting an evacuation drill later this Term and a lockdown drill early Term 3. This evacuation/fire drill will be held whilst children are on the playground. Students will practise leaving the playground and moving to our evacuation point on Bain Park, Avondale Street. Our Lockdown procedures require students to practice within the classroom. This is a standard approach to keeping the students safe from harm and risk if such a scenario happens at and during school times.

Wonder Recycling Awards for Schools
Help us turn bread bags into equipment!
Our school is taking part in the Wonder Recycling Rewards campaign this Term. Help us collect bread bags (from any brand) enabling us to earn points to redeem on new RHSports equipment. It’s simple! All you need to do is keep your empty bread bags and send them to school with the children! We will then place them in the Wonder’s pink collection box and in turn post them off for recycling. The more we collect the more points our school earns! Collections close Friday 25 June 2021.
- Tip for collecting: Use one empty bread bag to collect a bunch of other bags.
Please be aware that any changes or information updates made to your child's profile on Operoo, only update Operoo and not the School's database.
Please advise the Office 6585 1745 of all changes; especially contact numbers, address details and medical information.
Thank you
